R13.08: Kissena Twilight Series 4/24 - Cat 3/4

Well the first track night of the season has come.  I tried to make a conscious effort to worry less about how I might compare to everyone else, which I think worked.  I still had a lot of jitters and nervousness beforehand.  I wonder if that ever goes away.

I snuck out of work early to get to the track on time.  The weather during the day could best be described as perfect.  Warm, sunny, great.  The drive to the track, however, saw a strange fog roll across from the south, which brought with it cold, damp, windy, weird weather.  It made for a not-so-comfortable series of races.

The turnout was really good, with some notables being Mattie, JoshS, Aaron, Karl, Andy, Pete Rizzo, Robert, Phil and Chris, and most of the pink rhino ladies.  The program was short and sweet due to a lack of light, which was fine by me.

I had enough time to do a decent warm up.  Generally I wouldn't even mention it, but for two reasons this time.  One, I actually recorded it with my garmin, so I need some kind of preface to the gconnect link.  The second reason is that as I was rolling around, I saw some kind on the front of a paceline yell at some other kid to move up track.  "UPTRACK! UPTRACK!!"  Naturally, the guy who was already in the sprinters lane was completely confused and moved up track eventually, but I'm sorry, that's just not how it's done.  If you're leading the pace line, it's your responsibility to move around the other riders on the track.  Better luck next time.

Race numero uno was a 3 lap scratch with full neutral lap.  I was feeling a bit antsy, so I lined up first on the rail, lead the neutral lap, and then attacked right away.  I felt good the first two laps, but I definitely felt like I was going backwards on the last lap.  Fortunately, I was able to hold it with the exception of Karl passing me around turn 3 or 4 on the final lap.  Still, 2nd place wasn't bad.

Between each race, I would put my pants and hood-sweat back on, and basically cling to the ground for residual warmth.  The asphalt felt wonderful.

Race two was a 9 lap points, with three sprints.  My legs still felt dead from the first hard effort with the only warmdown being the horrible cold weather.  I lined up at the front on the rail again, but then Andy pulled up right in front of me.  I was able to win the first sprint, but then on the backstretch of that next lap an attack went, which I just couldn't respond to.  I was stuck in no man's land with Adreas, who was completely content with not bridging up.  This is kind of funny, because had he helped me bridge, he definitely could have gotten some good points and probably came in second.  Instead, he was only able to pick up a handful of fourth place points which put him in fourth overall.  My first sprint was good enough for third.

The final race was a Chariot.  Since we had about 16 people in our field, we split into two qualifying heats and one final.  I switched to my 14t on the disc for the chariots, which I'm still not sure if it was smart or not. I never felt on top of the gear, but I was going fast.  Robert was my holder/pusher for both chariots, with a push so good I probably could have gotten by without pedaling at all.

Here's the first heat.  I had a little gap the whole way around to win.

The final saw Josh fly past me between turns 1 and 2, which I clawed back slightly, but in the end he got it and I came in second again.

This concluded the racing.  Karl won the omnium, and I came in second, with Andy in third.  Now those are some good results.

2013.22: Peak.2 - 4/22 - 4/28

Sunday: Track training with Sree and a bunch of others.  Kim was there with Mike W, Sherri, and a few others.  Andy, Josh, and Keiran (I appologize if that's spelled incorrectly) comprised the Kissena squad.  Alessandro was out training some guys including Mike H.  Eventually, MikeH, Ale, Sree, and I went and got Indian food.  It was delicious again.  Maybe one day I'll eat enough I can pretend I know what I'm talking about.  After that, I did a few laps with Johnny and a couple others.

After I came home, I did a few miles with Dan.  As soon as I got on the bike, my right knee started acting up again.  I'm pretty sure it's cleat position, which I'm now playing with.  I've also decided to replace my cleats on the track shoes, which I'll do at work tomorrow.  We stopped for pizza near the end, and the weather took a turn toward very chilly.

Saturday: No riding.  Out late last night.

Friday: Birthday ride to work and back.  Not much to write about.  Some girl in a beetle passed me real close on the turn going up landing ave to edgewood, so I told her to not do that.  Whatever.

Thursday: No riding.  I had thought about riding to work, and I probably should have.  The weather was beautiful but chilly.

Wednesday: The first Twilight Series race at K-town.  See the race report.

Tuesday:  My typical long ride day.  The weather was very uncooperative, though.  And I had to help my brother move some granite counter tops.  Somehow we managed to succeed without destroying anything.  No riding, though.  That's what I'm getting at here.

Monday: Rest day.  Rested.

2013.21: Peak.1 - 4/15 - 4/21

Sunday: Track training.  Sree and I were both kind of beat, so we half-assed some workouts.  I think maybe a flying 200 or so.  After that was the Pink Rhino clinic.  I didn't really help, I just rode around with Steve's group and explained track pace lines a little bit.

Saturday: No riding.  Rested.

Friday: Rode to work and back this time.  My garmin title tells me it was windy on the way out, and windy and foggy on the way back.  I definitely remember the fog.  It rolled in just before my work day was over.  Weird stuff.

Thursday: I was able to ride to work.  I took the train home, as I worked until 9pm.  On the train home was that girl I saw the other day.  Did I mention her?  We were riding opposite direction on three sisters and both looked back to check each other out.  I forgot her name, didn't get her number, so good job me.

Wednesday: No riding.  Work.

Tuesday: Helped with some yard work, then rode around looking for a paint color for the Swan.  Mango Tango Pearl.  That's the one.  Afterward, I tried to ride to the lighthouse, but got scared by a passing shower, ran home, then met up with Dan for a little ride to the beaches.  The skies cleared up and it was beautiful out, but with a chilly wind out of the south.

Monday: Rest day.  Rested.  My whole right leg was achy and my hip locked up at one point.  Weird stuff.

2013.20: Build 2.4 - 4/8 - 4/14

Technically this is supposed to be a rest week after all my hard sprinting or something.  That's sticking to the original plan, but I think I changed the plan around a few weeks ago.  Which is not applicable any more anyhow.

Sunday: Went to the track with Sree.  We did some flying 200s before being shooed off the track for Joe's women's clinic.  Since my lap database was still full, no ride data was saved.  I've since realized that although I've deleted rides on my garmin's memory, the garmin still thinks they're there and allocated memory to them.  Problem solved.

Saturday: Hit the track after work.  I did more flying 4s with the wind.  I think I did two under, two race, two over-gear again.  Something along those lines.  It was windy and I felt like crud.
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/297484189

As I was getting ready to leave, Andy showed up, so we did a little bit of tempo, some hand slings, and maybe some flying 2's?  My lap database filled up apparently, so no more ride data was saved.

Friday: Tried to ride the rollers before work.  Failed absolutely.
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/297484207

Thursday: Still no riding.  Threat of rain, I think.

Wednesday: Workity work.  no riding.

Tuesday: I made big plans to head out east for a long ride on a warm day.  I ran into Karl on old town road, so he decided to head out east with me.  After a stop at the Kreb to talk tubular rims for a little while, we ended up in manorville.  Karl had some real training to do, so I left him to do that while I limped home too tired from not riding for a few weeks.

Monday: Rest day.  rested.

2013.19: Build 2.3 - 4/1 - 4/7

My astute readership might notice a little bit of a lapse in updates. This is because I've now reached the top secret portion of my training to give myself that winning edge over my competitors.

...not really, I've still been sick.

Sunday: Track training by my lonesome. Sree went to t-town with Josh. I stayed local and worked on standing starts and flying 2's and 4's. If I remember correctly, I did four under, four regular four two overgear standing starts.  I alternated home stretch vs back stretch and left leg vs right leg starts.  http://connect.garmin.com/activity/294941403

Saturday: still no.

Friday: no riding.

Thursday: nada.

Wednesday: nuh-uh

Tuesday: nope.

Monday: nothing
